Ribadeo

After doing paperwork, laundry showering etc. It was lunchtime so I took the rather unique scenic elevator up to town, Ribadeo being built sensibly on a hill to seek out a panadaria. Spotting an elderly lady with a barra ( loaf ) I asked her to direct me to the right place and it was a good job she did for I would never have found it, it didn't even have sign outside just a door. After lunch Lynne and I again took the scenic elevator and met with another elderly lady who in very good English described some of the interesting sights to be seen from the elevators tower. She pointed out the houses built by the ' Indios ' who had made there fortune in South America and returned to build imposing houses. Also the canon that were in place to defend the town.

The white building is a palace built by an Indio, he later had it extended and had a private chapel built, it's just above Lynnes head.

She then directed us towards the small chapel at the top of the hill.

Apparently the first in Ribadeo and dedicated to fishermen.

It was lovely chatting to her even though I completely forgot to ask her name or enquire how she spoke such good English. As we parted she directed us along a street in the old town where we would find the grandest of the Indios houses, and she wasn't joking!

The street wandered ever up towards the square, the ' Praza do Campo', we are noticing that spellings change every 100 miles!
The square is beautiful, a shady space surrounded by lovely buildings. The grandest as our friend had previously informed us was Morenos tower.

It's not particularly obvious in my photo but the roof tiles are some form of gilt  and even from sea were very obvious dazzling in reflected sunlight.

This fellow is outside the old customs house.

Lynne was particularly pleased that although in an obvious state of disrepair the Morenos tower was being refurbished and is going to look fabulous when back to its full glory.

We had our usual informative visit to the tourist information office ( We never did find out what these two were about, we presume for one of the many festivals ) but would need to go to the bus station to enquire about a bus to Lugo ( I have a hankering to see the Roman town walls there )

We bumped into Peter and Lynda in the square and enjoyed a coffee together.
I think we will enjoy our stay here.
