We walked into the town of Laredo ( no Cowboys dying or otherwise anywhere ) it is a town very popular with the Spanish for holidays and there has been a lot of development along the seemingly endless beach.
Of course swimming and sunbathing is very much a Lynne thing so the numerous showers , lifeguards and spotlessly clean sand got a big tick of approval for a wee stay.
We had a look around the modern part of town thinking it reminded us of Tennerife a little bit as it was so obviously geared up for holidaymakers. However after tea I decided to go off exploring myself and discovered another side to the town.
If you look closely at the above photo you should be able to spot the church of Santa Maria in the middle and to the right a positive demarcation between old and new towns ( there is a cemetery in the forground.
The old town is the usual rabbit warren of pokey streets and overhanging balconies, there is also an abundance of paintings on the many wooden panels. This is a good example.
Fascinating. As I made my way back towards the marina I came across a tunnel going through the hill behind Dark Tarns berth, it runs to the remains ( not obvious ) of the old harbour.
It is a long way through the hill along a very well lit but somewhat damp tunnel roughly hewn from the limestone rock.
It emerges in a totally unexpected way on the north coast.
As the sun was beginning to set I hurried to the top of the hill I had just walked under to watch the sun set. It proved to be a far more strenuous effort than the tunnel! However the views were to die for.
Dark Tarn could just be seen below as the sun set in the west and a full moon rose in the east.
I think we will need to explore a little more............
Of course first there was swimming and sunbathing to be done!
